Gotta assume you're talkin about the 80s. Well, for the most part, I'd say you have a point. For me, most of the 80s was MTV-bred crap. Most of the really good, groundbreaking work came out of the *early* 80s w/ some of the better new wave bands. But by the mid 80s, it was all about making a bad video to go w/ a forgettable pop song.

Depeche Mode didn't get "good" until "Some Great Reward". Metal was actually good around the time DM came out. By the end of the 80s DM was playing stadiums. By 93... Gahan had a rocker look but was smacked up.. I'm sure he stunk too but the shows were some of the best.

Depeche Mode came out of the early 80's synthpop/new romantic scene, and have improved with age! They aren't a rock band: they describe themselves as an electronic band that use guitars, and they didn't start using more 'rock' imagery and sound until the late 80's, around the time of Music For The Masses. Their most rock-flavoured album is Songs Of Faith %26amp; Devotion. As you say, good original music! All the 'hair metal' bands stunk because they were more about the image, and possibly because they used too much hairspray! I believe these bands were responsible for the hole in the ozone layer.
