Hair question, I need help. Hair guru's..please answer.?

I have very long dark brown hair..Thing is, I want to get about four inches completely white, not blonde, at the bottom, like a tail. And then straight to my other color, no fading of orange or any color in between, you know what I mean?....Just a straight line..is there any trick? Some rubber bands and conditioner to make a barrier line? Should my hair be wet whenever I try this white technique? Any help. Please be detailed. I want alot of help hair people! =]

I know what you mean... I think. I did that to my hair. Like the bottom half of my hair was blonde and the rest was just black.

What I did was I tied up the hair that I was not going to dye. Then, I applied Vaseline along the roots of the hair that I did not want to dye. Then, I just dyed my hair like normal, but I was a bit more careful when dying the roots.
