Are Guns n Roses and Aerosmith considered hair metal bands?

Once or twice i see people calling them hair metal bands but i thought they were just hard rock bands?

i see no correlation with Guns n Roses/Aerosmith and hair metal bands like Poison...

Definitely not Aeorsmith. They had been at if for over a decade when the hair band era kicked off in the mid 80's. As for GnR, I'm kinda on the fence. Appetite for Destruction was released in 1987 in the midst of the hair band days, but their brand of metal had more substance to it than other bands like Poison. But whatever you wanna call them, they kicked a$s!!

No - they're not "hair" metal......"Hair" metal is more the "big hair" bands from the 80's...Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison,....etc. Aerosmith started in the early 70's....long before "hair bands"!

I would consider them straight old rock and roll. The hair metal bands were cookie cutter copy cats of each other. Pretty boys really. Their music was predictable. Guns and Roses and Aerosmith are leaders. There has been no copycats of them. Bands that are one of a kind I would not lump in a genre of hair bands.

No, but Guns N' Roses started off as glam rock, and then turned into a hard rock band. Still two of the best hard rock bands ever though.

GnR, and Aerosmith are rock bands, not what is now called "metal". The "big hair" groups were primarily in the 80's. Poison, Whitesnake, even VanHalen. So because of the "big hair" style of that period, you can say Aerosmith was included in the group.

GN'R came on the scene in L.A. in the late '80s, which was packed with hair bands like Poison. I'd actually consider GN'R a combination of hard rock and heavy metal.

I know for a fact that the hair metal station on Sirius plays GnR. This is mostly due to the fact that their popularity coincided with Poison and the rest. However, they sort of transcended simply being only hair metal. They are more along the lines of hard rock and some go as far to call them heavy metal.

No because their styles of playing were much more blues based than hair-metal bands such as Poison and Warrant.

Back in the 80's I would have considered them as such.at least just a bit..but now I don't..Aerosmith has definitely grown out of that genre..GNR if still were together than probably would have grown out of it too....Regardless I love both these bands
